Slack vs Discord

There are a lot of options out there when it comes to communication tools for teams. But which one is the best? Slack and Discord are two of the most popular communication tools for businesses and remote teams, both offer a variety of features that can be beneficial for businesses, but they also have some key differences. Here's a look at Slack vs Discord to help you decide which is the best fit for your business.

Slack is a communication tool that allows businesses to create channels for different topics, departments, or projects. Users can send direct messages or @mention other users to start a conversation. Slack also integrates with a variety of other business tools, which can be helpful for businesses that use multiple software programs.

Discord is a communication tool that is primarily used by gamers. However, Discord can also be used for businesses. Discord offers features such as voice and video calls, text chats, and file sharing. Discord also has a variety of bots that can be used to automate tasks, such as scheduling meeting reminders or sending out notifications.

So, which is the best communication tool for businesses? Slack or Discord? Both Slack and Discord have their pros and cons, so it really depends on the needs of your business...

Slack vs Discord: Chat

Text chat seems simple enough, it's something we've been doing since the internet started, but across a large team with lots of users it's easy to lose yourself or lose some of those important conversations. Slack seems a bit more focused on keeping things organised and has a few extra features over Discord, yet saying that Discord has been catching up recently!

  • Slack lets you privately create posts and conversations for future reference (just DM yourself!), Discord doesn't support this
  • Slack allows you to create sidebar sections, so you can organize all your channels into the things that are most relevant to you, something that Discord is missing
  • Slack offers a Mentions & Reactions view so you can find where you've been mentioned and pick up where you were last

There are lots of other little things that make Slack stand out a little bit more than Discord, things as the file size limit for sharing files, Slack is much more generous with this. Slack really is focused on business use and helping you keep your day-to-day organized, whereas Discord seems less focused on this. That said, Discord is still really great, it just feels like Slack has some better tooling around this.

Slack vs Discord: Audio & Video

Discord really excels on the Audio & Video front, after all, Discord was originally designed for gamers chatting whilst they play games. Both Slack & Discord offer your traditional phone calls and screen sharing, but Discord has a lot more tooling around being able to adjust each person's volume and the sound quality seems just that much better.

With Discord, users can drop into a room and start chatting, it's less like a formal call and more just like a place where a conversation is happening. Slack has recently added a new feature called Huddles, which is similar and helps you work side-by-side with your team.

Slack vs Discord: Integrations

Slack offers thousands of integrations, mostly focused on business applications, things such as Twitter, Google Drive & Zoom. On the other hand, Discord has bots built by third parties, which tend to have less of a business focus and more of a focus on Gaming. If you're serious about getting some work done, then maybe Slack is the best for its integrations!

Slack vs Discord: Pricing

Both Discord and Slack offer free and paid tiers. Discord is more focused on communities whereas Slack is more focused on organizations.

Running a Discord server is free and gives the vast majority of features. Users can pay for Nitro giving more chat features, bigger file uploads and better video quality, but for the most part, Discord remains fully featured on the free tier.

Slack on the other hand is much different. The free version is quite limiting, with only the 10,000 most recent messages only being stored and key features such as screen sharing being unavailable. It's only possible to upgrade an entire Slack team (rather than individual users), so it's definitely something that a business would be looking to do, rather than an individual.

Slack vs Discord: The verdict

Slack & Discord side-by-side in Wavebox

If you're a small team, small business or community then Discord is well worth considering. It's free and offers most of the features you'll need. If you're a small to medium business then Slack is probably the way to go. Sure audio and video aren't as good as Discord, but it's perfectly usable and if you feel that it really is that bad, there are plenty of other 3rd party services that work really well with Slack (Zoom as an example).

Whether you choose Slack or Discord, or maybe use both, the Wavebox helps you manage both of these in one desktop app. Unread badges and notifications as well as multi-account support really help to boost your productivity!
