What are Spaces and how do I use them in Wavebox?

Many of us who work all day in the browser end up running lots of profiles simultaneously to stay signed in and up-to-date whilst still keeping parts of our lives separated (i.e. Work & Home). As your life gets more complicated, your browsing setup becomes more cumbersome.

This is one of the main reasons we built Wavebox. Spaces were the driving force behind our conception, read on to find out how they work and how they will transform how you work on the web. ?

‌                        ?

Spaces have been through several iterations since Wavebox was first created, they have previously been called Cookie containers, Cookie profiles and Sandboxing

How do Spaces work?

Wavebox Spaces are used to isolate or share cookies between groups and apps. They allow you to work across an unlimited number of different 'personas' all within the same browser window. Here are some factoids about spaces:

  • You can create as many Spaces as you like in Wavebox.
  • Using Spaces, you can stay signed in to every account e.g., multiple Gmails, Slacks, Discords, etc.
  • You can seamlessly work across all your Spaces without signing in and out.
  • You can easily create, edit, manage and delete Spaces in 'Settings > Spaces.'

3 spaces in the same window, each with its own use

When you first install Wavebox, you'll be guided to create three Spaces, Work, Home and Side hustle. These are shown at the top of the webdock and clicking between them switches the space. As you change them, you'll notice the groups and apps in each space change too.

‌                        ?

Wavebox has 3 webdock layouts, the Spaces layout where only apps in the current group are shown, the List layout where groups are shown in all spaces and the Explorer layout which gives a tree-style view across all spaces

Typically Wavebox users, use spaces to separate parts of their lives. When you're in a space you can focus on the purpose of that space, for example, work. Wavebox still works hard to keep you up-to-date across all your spaces even when you're just in one, notice the red badge on the first space?

How do I create & customize a Spacce?

‌                                                                       Upload

You can use the plus button in the webdock, just below the spaces to create a new space at any time. Once you've created the space, right-click on it to change the name, icon and color of it.

When you add an app or group to the space, it automatically knows which space to use. If you're not using the spaces webdock layout, then you can pick which space to use during the app wizard.

What is the Default Space?

Wavebox has a concept of a Default Space, which is used when Wavebox doesn't have enough context to make a better decision on which space to use for something. Typically, but not always this is the first space in your webdock.

Which Space am I using?

Wavebox always shows the current Cookie Container in the address bar

Whether you're using an app or tab in the main Wavebox window, where it's easy to tell which space you're using, or you've found yourself in a new window with a tab and you're not sure, Wavebox always shows the current space in the address bar. You can use this anytime to figure out what space you're in and which cookies will be used.

Wavebox also provides some other subtle hints as to which space you're using. In the screenshot above, you might notice the background has a slight purple tint - this is taken from the spaces color.

‌                        ?

The space indicator in the address bar does more than just show the current space. Clicking on it reveals a handy menu with tools for changing the current space and more!

How do I rename and edit my Spaces?

‌                                                                       Upload

Settings > Cookie Containers

You can customize your spaces, by right-clicking on them in the webdock. If you're looking for more settings...

  1. Click on the settings cog in the bottom-left of the main Wavebox window
  2. Click on the Spaces tab along the top

Here you can find tools to change the badge, icon, name and more.

The Drag and Drop Spaces Manager allows you to check which apps are in each space and maybe move them around a bit.

Spaces and Extensions

Extensions work across all spaces, but under the hood, they store their extension cookies in your space cookie jar. Wavebox provides some additional options to lock an extension to a specific space, or run multiple instances of the extension.

What about Profiles?

Yes, Wavebox has Profiles just like other browsers! Wavebox Profiles enable you to create multiple instances of Wavebox, each with its own spaces, groups, apps, settings, and themes.
